I remember being about four and sitting on the floor with my sister with my face pressed against the glass door to the Engineer’s compartment watching the DIGITAL speedometer on the first BART train I ever rode. I knew what the numbers were and it went FAST. Anyway, this took me back. Truly makes BART look like what it was intended to be and still is: the clean, quiet, smooth transportation of the future. We thought it would lead to more and more. And it did! MUNI opened in the tunnel just above on Market street in 1980. Transit developments slowed down for a while but I’m looking forward to that first ride on the new central subway next year when I hope COVID-19 is in the rear view mirror.
